I don’t know about you, but when it gets this close to Christmas it’s hard to not get excited like a little kid. And if you’re extra lucky you may even have holidays booked or loved ones visiting. In just 12 more sleeps – me, Farmer and our 2 little
terrors darlings head off to Tasmania for a huge family reunion. The last one we has was in 1985!! My Dad was the eldest of eight kids so that means heaps of aunties, uncles and cousins. Many cousins have had babies too so it’s going to be a very cool kick start to the new year indeed!! So as I caught myself daydreaming away yesterday of how fun visiting Tasmania will be I suddenly wondered, what would I do if I bumped into someone famous?
It’s a random thought I know (I have plenty more to share -trust me) but while we are all having fun with family and friends this festive season, it’s quite possible we may look at the next door picnickers and think “Oh my gosh, is that…?” It could totally happen, those cool peeps are human too – despite what the trashy magazines try to convince us otherwise. But what my burning question to you is…How do you greet them and still stay cool? Would it be rude to interrupt them having a wonderful time with their loved ones just to pose for a photo or give an autograph? What if they groan and its awkward? What if THIS happens…
That would be mortifying! I’m not sure how you’d recover from that reaction!? But it’s a hard question hey. I’ve met a few famous people in my time but I tend to take the angle “I know who you are but it can be our little secret – wink, wink” kind of angle. I know, what the hell?! I blame my kookiness on watching too much Bewitched and The Love Boat as a child. I have no idea why I approach celebrities in this vein but here’s a few examples;
1. Coldplay – So these guys were very new to the music scene at the time and it was with much excitement The Big Day Out bands were staying in the hotel I was working at. 5 star service meant keeping your cool and not gushing over celebrities. The girls at reception had it sussed who was who and where they were, so when they rang through an order of coffees for Coldplay in the lobby I was MORE than delighted as I’d seen them the day before and simply fallen in love! As I passed out the coffees I couldn’t help myself, I gushed and said “By the way…LOVE your new album!” They all burst out laughing and asked “Which one was that?” So when I questioned “You’re Coldplay right?” they laughed even harder assuring me that that was a first and they were just the road crew! So there’s a reason why management tell you not to gush right? To avoid looking like a douche!
2. Rhys Muldoon (from House Husbands) – I was checking passengers in at the boarding gate and he was waiting in line. As I checked him on board I quietly said “By the way…love your show!” (Here I go again!?) He looked at me puzzled and said “Thanks!” Turns out he was filming the children’s TV show Lochie Leonard at the time as it’s filmed in WA. I was actually referring to Secret Life of Us. Oh so no wonder he thou…nevermind!
3. Kim from The Block – I bumped into this stylie lady in Perth’s Ikea store. A nearby fan was busy gushing and asking if she really was from The Block. It’s very surreal meeting someone that’s been in your lounge room for a few months. Experienced with celebrities, uber cool me says “Well! This is exciting” and giggled like a teenage girl?!! Oh man! I just can’t help myself!! Luckily she was an absolute darling and totally agreed as she gracefully entertained a few questions from her adoring fan and me standing there grinning like a dork!!
So hence I ask the question What would you do if you bumped into someone famous? Do you have a game plan? And taking a photo of yourself with them in the background is uber douche by the way. It’s a polite greet and selfie then get the hell out of there, unless they are incredibly cool and make you their new bff, see what happens. I did get it right years ago though. This is a picture of me with Iron Maiden’s Janick Gers in a London pub I worked in 11 years ago. He was a regular and a total regular sweet guy. He was often asked for autographs and happily posed for photos. I guess at the end of the day it has a lot to do with the celebrity themselves and your approach, so make sure you nail it! Have fun spotting! Have you got a celeb story to tell? Love to hear it 🙂
